MOHAWK HARDWOOD FLOORING FAQ

CAN I WET MOP MY MOHAWK HARDWOOD FLOOR?
You should never wet mop a hardwood floor, this will raise the grain and may permanently damage the wood’s surface. Use Mohawk Floor Care Essentials Hard Surface Products to clean and protect your hardwood floor. Always apply the Mohawk Floor Care Essentials Hard Surface Cleaner directly to the terry cloth flooring mop, not the floor.

DO I HAVE TO KEEP THE ROOM TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY CONTROLLED
ALL YEAR ROUND?

All hardwood floors can be adversely effected by extreme changes in humidity. During the hot, humid weather a de-humidifier may be required. Although engineered wood floors are less effected than solid wood floors, in the dry, heated winter months humidification may be necessary to prevent surface checking.

CAN A MOHAWK LAMINATE FLOOR BE INSTALLED OVER MY EXISTING FLOORING?
Mohawk Laminate Floors can be installed of many types of existing floors, such as ceramic tile, vinyl, and hardwood. Have your local Mohawk Flooring dealer make an inspection to determine if the existing flooring is suitable for this purpose. Never try to install a floating floor over another floating floor.

ARE QUICK•STEP® FLOORS RECOMMENDED FOR USE IN BATHROOMS?
WHAT AREAS IS THE PRODUCT RECOMMENDED FOR?

Quick•Step® laminate floors are very durable and made with our patented Uniclic® locking system. This locking system allows for the use of our products in both bathrooms and kitchens as long as certain precautions are taken. We do not recommend the use of any of our beveled products in bathrooms. However, our non-beveled products can and have been used successfully in bathrooms. We have special installation instructions to follow when installing Quick•Step® laminate flooring in the bathroom. In the kitchen, you may use any of our products including beveled products. Care must be taken to avoid leaving water on the floors. The perimeter gap around the sink, dishwasher, garbage compactor, any outside entrance door, and behind the refrigerator must be completely filled with Quick•Step® Sealant or a quality silicon caulk. Wet areas include but are not limited to: bathrooms, powder rooms, kitchens, mud rooms, foyers, and laundry rooms. Neither Quick•Step® flooring, nor Quick•Step® accessories are recommended for extreme humidity applications such as in saunas or swimming pool areas.

STEAM MOP SYSTEM QUESTION
I bought one of the Shark steam mops and I wanted to make certain it is OK to use it on the floors. I asked the guy I bought the floors from and he said he called the steam mop manufacturer and never got an answer. Could you help me please?

A: Steam mops use water vapor under pressure, and we cannot recommend them for that reason. Water causes wood to swell, resulting in raised edges, possible finish peeling, etc. We recommend using Somerset's specially-formulated Ultimate Cleaner. We also make available a Mop Kit and replacement mop heads to make cleanup easy.

Should I use polish on my new Congoleum floor?

Do not apply polish on Ultima, DuraCeramic, DuraPlank II, AirStep Advantage, AirStep Evolution or AirStep Plus. These products contain Scotchgard Protector in the wearlayer that already provides excellent protection. For other Congoleum floors, application of polish will provide additional protection, so we recommend using it as part of your regular maintenance.

What is Polished Finish?
A mirror-like, glossy surface that brings out the color and character of the stone to its fullest, because it optimally reflects the light.

What is Honed Finish?
A velvety smooth surface with little or no gloss. The degree of honing depends on the stone, but may vary from light to heavy.

What is Tumbled Finish?
A weathered, aging finish achieved when the stone is tumbled with sand, pebbles, or steel bearings. Tumbled stone may present chipped edges and imperfections created by the tumbling process. These characteristics give the stone more of a worn, old look.

What is Antique Brushed Finish?
A finish that replicates rustic or distressed textures. This finish tries to replicate the naturally occurring effects of the aging process.

What is Natural Cleft mean?
This term usually refers to slate stones. It means a cleavage face formed when the stone is split into any thickness.

What does Gauged mean?
This term usually refers to slate stones. It refers to the process through which slate tiles are all calibrated to a specific thickness.

What could be causing cracks to appear in ceramic floor tiles?
There is always a remote possibility of an individual fractured tile, usually caused by not being bonded properly and then being impacted by an object dropping on it. That type of fracture is repaired by replacing the damaged tile. A sure rule of thumb to determining the problem: if the crack goes from one tile to another on a continuous line through the grout joint, the problem, without any doubt, is in the substrate; usually a crack in the slab. The damaged tile would have to be removed, a crack isolation membrane put down and the tile reinstalled; which should solve the problem.

What is the best way to clean abrasive quarry tile without leaving mop strings?
First, with any abrasive tile, you cannot use a standard mop as it will be torn to shreds and leave strings on the floor. A nylon mop will not normally leave "strings" behind. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure you always use clean water. Change as often as necessary. When cleaning this floor, it must be scrubbed daily (at least) with a brush and, if available, use a vac system (wet vacuum) to pull up the residue of water. At least once a week the floor should be cleaned with an electric floor scrubber. If no vac system is available, surplus water must be accumulated in one area and gathered up, or some commercial kitchens have drains for disposal of excess water.
